Information economy and inequality: Wage polarization, unemployment, and occupation transition in Taiwan since 1980
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines whether Taiwan’s economic inequality has worsened as Taiwan has evolved into an information economy, a transformation which began around 1980. The paper explores this relationship by investigating three specific research questions. First, has there been a rise in wage inequality in Taiwan since 1980; and if so, what are the sources of this rise in inequality? Second, has the transition to an information economy contributed to a rise in unemployment rates? And third, what type of occupational structural transformation occurred during this transition? The paper shows that since 1980, wage inequality, unemployment, and the white-collar–blue-collar worker employment ratio have all sharply increased in Taiwan. Furthermore, the reasons for these changes seem closely related to the relative growth of the information economy. 2008 Elsevier Inc. Aggregate Reallocation Shocks and the Dynamics of Occupational Mobility and Wage Inequality
This paper presents a dynamic model of structural unemployment and occupational choice in which an economy is subjected to aggregate reallocation shocks. Reallocation shocks, which change the relative labour productivity across occupations, drive variation in the distribution of workers across occupations. The wage paid to workers in a given occupation depends on its labour productivity and the...

Combining time-varying within-occupation task information from representative German labor force surveys with linked plant–worker data for Germany, we establish three interrelated facts: (1) Larger plants and exporters organize production into ...

The predictions of our simple model are consistent with the contrasting performance of the labor market in Europe and US in terms of unemployment, productivity growth and ...
متن کاملB. Global trends in wages by sector and occupation
Since the 1980s, evidence from crosscountry studies has shown the existence of rising inequality in wages and earnings. In many highand low/middle-income countries, the wages of high-skilled workers have increased, while those of low-skilled workers have grown relatively more slowly, fallen or remained stagnant. For example, in the United States, real earnings of low-wage workers have fallen wh...

Research on the trend has focuse...
